Shirah is an ancient text, attributed to King David,
comprising 84 sections composed of Biblical verses that
articulate the song of creation to G-d: the song of
the heavens and the earth, of the sun and the moon,
the trees, the animals, the birds, the fish, and even
the insects. Perek Shirah is a cosmic hymn to the Creator
in which all of creation, including the winds, clouds,
all species of birds, mammals and fish sing praises
for their very existence. The praises are expressed
in the form of scriptural quotations, reflecting the
Jewish belief in the interdependence of study and prayer.
This tenth-century work also reflects an acute awareness
of the spiritual dimension of nature and the environment.

*What
is the Talmud? Our tradition teaches that G-d gave the Torah to
the Jewish people at Mt. Sinai. He dictated it word for word and
letter by letter to Moses, who wrote it down in a scroll. Every
subsequent Torah Scroll was then checked against the original for
accuracy. This is the Written Torah; in Hebrew it is called the
Chumash, referring to the Five Books it contains (Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy); in English it is called the
Pentateuch. The Written Torah is only half of the Torah. The other
half is the Talmud, the explanation of the meaning and application
of the laws and standards set forth in the Torah. It also contains
aggadata, homiletical stories which transmit insights into life,
values and the mystical traditions. This explanation was handed
down as the Oral Law to ensure the accuracy of its transmission.
Close to 2,000 years ago because of Roman persecutions, the Sages
redacted the Oral Law into the Mishna, Teachings; the expanded commentary
on the Mishna was redacted approximately 1,500 years ago as the
Talmud (also known as the Gemara in Aramaic, the language of the
Talmud). Together the Torah and the Talmud are the central unifying
force of the Jewish people.
